In keeping with tradition, VA Elite recognized two players as the best big and little sisters this past weekend! Elena from the 13s team and Cloe from the 17s teams were the only "sisters" to come support the 14s and 15s team at the VA Elite 16/15 tournament over the weekend. Elena made a great sign, sat on the bench and worked to cheer on her club mates (the 15s team) to a 2nd place finish! Cloe came and supported her little sister, Vela, who appreciated the support and felt that she played better knowing Cloe was there to support her, always with a thumbs up, big smile and cheer! Congratulations ladies!!

Congratulations to 16’s Libero, Kenzie Higareda and 15’s Setter/OH Jessica Wang for making the Prep Volleyball FROSH 59, their list of the nation’s most outstanding varsity-playing volleyball freshmen for the 2011 fall season.
Highest Honorable Mention
Kenzie Higareda, 5-1 Libero, Forest Park (Woodbridge, Virginia) – Higareda was a first-team all-district and all-area selection after finishing with 438 digs, 62 aces, 32 kills and 32 assists to go with a 2.7 serve-receive rating (on a 3.0 scale). Higareda helped lead the Bruins back to the top of the Cardinal District and to within one win away from a state bid. Playing in Virginia’s top AAA division, Higareda used her passing and defense to help turn around a team that went 12-10 in 2010. Forest Park ended up 23-6 in 2011, winning the Hayfield tournament and Cardinal District before losing in the Northwest Region semifinals.
Honorable Mention
Jessica Wang, 5-9 S/OH, Thomas S. Wootton (Rockville, Maryland) – Honorable Mention All-Gazette, Wang hit outside and set part time for Wootton. She reached triple figures in kills and assists and improved greatly over the course of the season.
This weekend VA Elite's 16s set the Hampton Roads MAPL event on fire! Mayhem went into the event ranked 47 and finished the event tied for 21st. This was a higher finish than any other 16s team. The even more impressive point is that their only two losses came from two 18s teams. In fact, one of the two teams they lost to took the eventual champions to three sets! Mayhem has demonstrated that they are a force to be reckoned with at any age level, particularly in our region. As stated previously, Mayhem not only finished higher than any 16s team in the event, but they also finished higher than every 17s team from their region!
Amazing outcome aside, the thing that continually amazes the staff of this team is the enjoyment factor. On Friday night, during the team meeting, our club family was wowed by a choreographed dance routine performed by Alex Andrejev (setter). Single Ladies was playing in the background and applause, laughter and smiles filled the room.
This is a dream team to coach. The girls all genuinely love and support one another and the other girls in the club. They all come in early and not because our staff mandates it, but because they are driven. They also accept challenges such as playing out of position. All ten girls played in every match. While some clubs sit players 7-10 during playoff matches, VA Elite and Mayhem get those girls on the court and every teammate and parent supports every child.
The staff of VA Elite's 16s would like to thank the parents and players for an amazing weekend. Thank you club family!!!
Congratulations to the VA Elite 18's Team "X" for a stellar 2nd place finish at the first MAPL. The ladies of Team X left it all on the court over an impressive weekend of playing the strongest teams on the East Coast!
The Libero, Gabby Serafin and Setter, Jordan Leiter summed up the weekend below:
"On Saturday, the team started out with a slow 8AM match but was able to pull through with a win and wake up for the next couple matches. After two wins in the morning wave the girls continued to carry on the day with high intensity. With awesome serve receive from Gabby Serafin and Jenna Strange; setters Kaitlyn LaMantia and Jordan Leiter were able to run an efficient offense that was unstoppable for competitors.
On Sunday morning a win over I.C. Stars put team X into the gold bracket. Bre Atkinson, Mallory Brickerd and Katrina Kirby were able to put up a solid block with middles Kelsey Hrebenach, Alex Heyn and Sarah Delaney; leaving little court space open. Exceptional defense in the semi-final match against Carolina Juniors kept the team in the running for taking home the gold. The championship match between Elite 18's and Metro 18's was full of high level play and exciting rallies. In a close first game Virginia Elite fell short 26 to 28. The girls came out strong in game two but lacked a steady rhythm, which led them to be defeated 21 to 25.
Over the weekend, Virginia Elite 18’s team X took second place at MAPL in Hampton, Virginia."
Congratulations Team X players, coaches and parents!!
