2011 VA ELITE Girls

Meet the 2011 ELITE Girls

EXCELLENCE:

              Elyse Davidson - #13 (13 Blue)

Gio Gio Borgiotti  #5 (13 Black)

              Amanda Smith - #10 (14s)

              Alex Andrejev - #1 (15s)

             Claire Crutchfield - #16 (16s)

             Bre Atkinson – #20 (17s)

             Amy Christensen - #3 (18s)

The Winner of the Excellence Award for 2011 – Bre Atkinson

“As head coach of Team X, I propose that Bre Atkinson be nominated for the Excellence Award. Her intrinsic drive makes her a standout on the court, in the classroom and as a person. There are a couple of girls on my team that would benefit from a 28-hour day and Bre is definitely one of them.”

LEADERSHIP:

             Maxine Friedman - #4 (13 Blue)

             Sydney Early - #2 (14s)

              Madeline Fowler - #2 (15s)

              Molly Maloney - #11 (16s)

             Christine Beckham - #2 (18s)

The Winner of the Leadership Award for 2011 – Madeline Fowler

“I think without a doubt she is the leader of this team.  She moves the team with her cheering, her ability to use humor and her desire to see the team perform, and she is always willing to let others take more when she is not performing.  But more often than not she tries to put the team on her back and step up and lead by example.  She is quick to compliment and slow to criticize, I think a big part of leading.”

INITIATIVE:

             Sarah Maebius - #6 (13 Blue)

             Emily Sciorra - #1 (13 Black)

             Emily Solis - #7 (14s)

             Allison Bruder - #7 (15s)

             Kenzie Higareda - #4 (16s)

             Jenna Strange - #12 (17s)

             Susie Murach - #1 (18s)

The Winner of the Initiative Award for 2011 – Emily Sciorra

“Enthusiasm - Emily demonstrates enthusiasm for the game both on and off the court while in a game or at practice. She is one of my dual sport athlete that was in almost in tears at one of our tournaments because she was trying to convince her mother to let her stay and play the rest of the tournament with the other girls instead of going to play in her basketball game. Even though she left to play basketball because she knew she had made a commitment to that team as well, I do remember hearing from some of the girls that they were going to miss her contagious enthusiasm. I think she was the one on the team that started the girls all wanting to have different hand shakes or fist pumps while the official is checking lineups.

Drive - Emily is a product of our Middle School program. She was originally an alternate for our team but had no desire to play anywhere else. She shows up at every practice wanting to get stronger and improve her game. She is not a kid that you need to ask her to do anything twice. She is typically the first in the gym to hustle after a ball whether it is shagging or in a game. During our regional’s, she chased down a ball while running though the team bench to get the ball back in play. After the match, I asked her how her shin felt from hitting the bench and she said it hurt a little but it was not going to keep her from getting out there to compete. The other girls see this in her and try to step their own game up because of this.

Confidence - Emily is not the tallest kid on the team, but she probably plays with the most confidence. For a 13 year old, I have not coached a kid that will go back to serve and look at the other team and try to choose where she will serve whether it is short or deep whether it is game point or the first point. This something she started doing on her own and I encouraged because she is not only analyzing the other team but she has the confidence to do what she thinks will be most effective. She is not afraid to swing at a ball from anywhere on the floor at anytime in the game.”

TEAMWORK:

             Hanna Aycock - #11 (13 Blue)

             Sydney Daniel - #1 (14s)

             Cydney Gill - #6 (15s)

             Katrina Kirby - #10 (17s)

             Jenna Flannigan - #11 (18s)

The Winner of the Teamwork Award for 2011 – Katrina Kirby

“As head coach of Team X, I propose that Katrina Kirby be nominated for the Teamwork Award. Katrina has made it very clear that she puts her team before any of her personal desires or goals. She has illustrated this by being one of the most vocal girls in the gym, finding a team mascot for us when we really needed our spirits lifted and playing a position that may not be her favorite or what she will play at the next level, but is what the team needed. I can always count on Kirby to be selfless and committed to what is the best interest of team X.”

ENJOYMENT:

             Rachel Cullen - #1 (13 Blue)

             Vela McBride - #4 (13 Black)

             Rachel Andrejev - #5 (14s)

             Mandy Powers - #4 (15s)

             Kate Whitmire - #7 (16s)

             Catherine “Smiley” Jamshidi -#2 (17s)

The Winner of the Enjoyment Award for 2011 – Rachel Andrejev

“Rachel is a young lady who excels at most of the ELITE values, but is done with joy in every area.  She is passionate about the sport and will do whatever it takes to improve, and it is always done with a smile on her face.  “Thank you sir, can I have another?”  Rachel is the first to celebrate loudly in practice and games.  Rachel can be the comic relief on the team as well as she will keep us all in stitches.  It is especially great when she can lighten the mood when all is too serious.  Rachel is a girl who brings joy to every aspect of the game.  She is a hard worker and works hard outside of practices as well.  Rachel knows what it takes to be an Elite player, excellence, leadership, initiative, and teamwork and is strong in all of these areas.  The difference is that Rachel exudes enjoyment in every aspect of the Elite values, and it is very contagious to all of our team, coaches as well.  I would not trade her for anyone else.  Under the word of Elite and enjoyment we should have Rachel’s picture.”

So on behalf of the VA Elite Board, we would like to congratulate all the families and players.  Please join us in celebrating the ELITE girls of 2011, as well as our seniors!

Many thanks to Jake, Ben and Gary for contributing so much to the Elite family. Your volleyball IQ will be sorely missed on the courts and your personalities will be missed all other times (especially on tournament weekend Friday nights).
