VA Elite Floater/Clinic Coaches

Bob Bell

bob.bell@vaelite.com

Bob Bell is a passionate volleyball fan, player, instructor, coach and father. He founded and has served as Commissioner of Vienna Youth Volleyball (VYV), since 2008. VYV currently has 300 girl and boy participants (emphasis on 4th through 8th grade-levels) in introductory and intermediate volleyball programs that are run in the spirit of USA Volleyball's grassroots initiatives. Bob is entering his fourth year of coaching, third year for a USA Volleyball club, and is IMPACT certified and CAP1 trained. He brings (too) many years of volleyball experience playing competitively and socially at Inter-Collegiate Club, USAV Mens A, Co-Ed and sand/grass doubles. His passion for the sport is fulfilled when he works with the younger players in teaching proper techniques and spreading the love of the game. His goal is to never be the last volleyball coach for any player - and his hope is that all his players progress to their next level of play (with an even better coach on an even better team).

Paul Bernett

paul.bernett@vaelite.com

Coach Bernett is entering his fourth year of coaching for Virginia Elite all at the 14’s level. He brings five years of volleyball experience playing at Mens A, Co-Ed and doubles. He has a passion for the sport and enjoys working with the younger girls focusing on proper technique and knowing the game. Preparing the girls for their high school careers is one of his goals and over the last three years all of the Virginia Elite 14’s girls have made their high school teams with the majority of them making varsity as a freshman.

As a parent of four children including a daughter who plays club volleyball, Paul brings that experience to his coaching. It enables him to better understand the concerns of the girls and parents involved in club volleyball.

Sara Brenner

sara.brenner@vaelite.com

Sara Brenner joined the VA Elite coaching staff in 2009 as an assistant 13s coach, having coached the previous year for an NVVA 12s team. She is CAP I-certified, and she brings her players more than 30 years of experience at the Division I, USAV open, and pro beach doubles level.

In college, Sara played Division I for Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Since then, she has played on USAV teams for more than 20 years, competing in 14 national indoor tournaments. Her top finishes include 4th place in the Women’s Open Division at the 1994 USAV Nationals, and 2nd place in the Women’s 40s Division at the 2000 USAV Nationals, where she was a First Team All-Tourney Selection. More recently, Sara played for and served as Vice President of the Washington DC Pro Women’s Volleyball Tour (2004).

Outdoors, Sara has played both sand and grass doubles tournaments for more than 20 years throughout the US and Canada. She has won national championships in both sand and grass, including the 1989 National Sand Open Championship in California, the FOVA National Sand Open Championship (1990), the FOVA National Grass Open Championship (1992), the Bud Light National Sand Championship (1993), and – most recently – the USAV Sand Open National Championship (2000).

Sara is married with two children, and lives in McLean, Virginia. She enjoys tennis, competing in the U.S. Tennis Association on a number of 4.5 women’s and 9.0 mixed teams.

Bill Bush

Bill.Bush@vaelite.com

Bill began playing volleyball as a junior in high school intramurals, back in Gainesville, Florida.  His playing days included Open level play for Washington Volleyball club (indoor) and the EVA (and other) outdoor tour events and other tournaments (at just about every beach that ever hosted a tournament) up and down the east coast.  He counts his greatest “win” as meeting his wife of 18 years, Nancy (who played for Penn State).

Bill’s passion for volleyball led him to co-founding the first competitive youth volleyball program in Northern Virginia over 22 years ago.  Some of our own Virginia Elite coaches were players in that program and one coach went on to become a three-time assistant coach for the USA Men’s National team.

Since getting married and having three boys, Bill decided to partner with his school’s PTA to start an innovative volleyball program for younger kids.   He was told it wouldn’t work.  But, it does work… the program is free and boasts weekly attendance of almost 60 young athletes.  Over 300 kids have participated in this program since it began.  Bill hopes to provide the younger kids a fun way to learn and love the game.  So far, so good.

Bill joined Virginia Elite in 2010 as a clinic coach and he is CAP II certified.  He has coached 18s, 16s and 14s teams in his past but mostly works as a clinician and float coach.  His favorite part of teaching is that moment when someone finally starts to “get it” while learning a new skill.
