Virginia Elite Digs for Breast Cancer Research

May 2, 2019 Author: Lexi Patton

Virginia Elite is more than just volleyball! We are a family of athletes, parents, coaches and people who support each other through the sport of volleyball. We were given the opportunity to support one of our athletes 3 years ago when her mother was diagnosed for a second time with stage IV metastatic breast cancer. Maddie Bonifas was on our 14s team in 2016 when her mother passed away after her battle with breast cancer and it was at that point Elite wanted to do more!

We worked closely with the Sideout Foundation and through them were introduced to the Dig-A-Thon! This year all Virginia Elite teams participated in the Dig-A-Thon at Capitol Hill on President’s Day weekend. Virginia Elite teams contributed 1,107 digs towards the Dig-A-Thon national goal of 150,000 digs. Not only did we dig but between pledges and donations we also raised $6,626 dollars for the Sideout Foundation stage IV breast cancer research.

As of May 2nd, three of our teams, 17s Team $1,860, 13s Team $1,559 and 16s Team $1,225 still own the three highest fundraising pages for the Dig-A-Thon.

Maddie Bonifas leads the dig pink efforts for Virginia Elite and is hosting an the 2nd Annual Dig Pink Summer Kick-off event on June 15th.  This is a grass doubles tournament for juniors and Reverse-CoEd quads for adults.  If you'd like to contribute to our dig pink efforts and participate in our tournament please click here for more information.
